On the road again...

7 Aug 2024

What a great weekend!

How time flies! Artwalk Freo 24 in May was a great event, where I could share much of my life & art. Over 800 people traversed through our home / my studio / our hood - South Fremantle on that beautiful, sunny May weekend.

It was an event full of chat, joy, sticky-beak-ing, art, neighbours meeting neighbours. People walking, gangs cycling, curiosity. A number of ladies wanted me to adopt them just for the use of my sunken bathtub set in the garden.

Collector plates for special occasions

My art takes you to a place you love, a character you’d like to live with, and an encounter you’d like to have.

I launched the Art Collector Plates at Artwalk Freo 24. Each plate is a limited edition of 50. The 2024 edition was curated by an intimate group of supporters living in Fremantle. They selected the paintings that sung to them.

On the road again...

I've been on the road since end of June, on a 77 day adventure. First stop was England!

It was all about reconnecting with people I love! Sharing a part of their everyday lives. Catching up with where life is for them, and for me.

It was being involved in an extended family project, which brought me closer to those cousins alive and those aunts, uncles, grandparents that have passed on. What influence those that have gone had on us.

It made me think about my nieces and nephews; what do I share with them of my life? How can I connect with them? What are their lives about and where do we intersect? What do these former generations of great grandparents; great aunts and uncles and their memorabilia mean to next generations, if anything as in most cases they never met those dead and gone.

On reflection, I realise that I did not start to seek these stories of our family life until I was much older than they are today.

Venice biennale and a professional development incubator

At this moment I’m in Venice, halfway through my journey. I’m catching my breath. I’ve had two much needed nights of sleep. The air is soft. There is the sounds of ciccada’s, seagulls, boats passing, soft conversations. I’m enjoying a Sunday morning cappuccino overlooking Plaza St Marco.

This contrasts to the past two weeks of intensity, crowded streets, dripping heat filled marches crisscrossing the city viewing galleries, pavilions and and hearing talks from curators, artists, project managers, fundraisers, communications and art business experts.

In the company of thirty-one global artists and curators I’ve been immersed in an incubator. Each of us exploring our dreams, our fears, our joys, our motivations for our art & art careers. With the renowned Venice Art biennial as a backdrop.

Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere, the 2024 International Art Exhibition of La Biennale di Venezia has several meanings. First of all, that wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners— they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner.

We came, we saw, we laughed, cried, shared, dug deep. Over the southern spring I will share the experience of the European Cultural Academy’s ‘Contemporary Art: Framework to develop your ideas’. I spent two focused, deep and inspirational weeks strategizing the next steps of my career.

Inspirational novel:

Has Anyone Seen Charlotte Salter? by Nicci French

I devour a couple of novels a week and Nicci and French are two of my favourite authors. I have read all their books. This book portrays how individuals navigate through their complex relationships, secrets, and the haunting aftermath of a crime that shattered their existence.
